Triathlon Zimbabwe last week announced a 17-member team of junior and youth athletes to take part in the South African Triathlon Championships to be held at the Maselspoort Resort in Bloemfontein on March 17.

The Zimbabwe team was announced by Triathlon Zimbabwe convener of selectors Pamela Fulton after the conclusion of the 2018 Bonaqua Troutbeck ATU Sprint Triathlon African Cup at the Troutbeck Resort in Nyanga last Saturday.

The team will be captained by in-form Hellenic Academy student Andoni Mutzuris, and Peterhouse Girls’ Jamie-Lee Soper.

Hellenic Academy have been establishing themselves in Zimbabwe schools sports after contributing nine triathletes in the 16-member squad while Peterhouse have nine pupils in the touring squad.

The duo of Gabrielle de Chassart and Gideon Benade, who are former students at Hellenic Academy and Peterhouse respectively, will also be part of the Zimbabwe squad in Bloemfontein.

Benade, who made his elite debut during the 2018 Bonaqua Troutbeck ATU Sprint Triathlon African Cup, will be representing Zimbabwe in the 2018 Free State African Cup Elite Men’s event taking place during the same weekend at the Maselspoort Resort.

De Chassart is scheduled to compete in the Girls U-19 race where Zimbabwe will also be represented by Soper and Katie Dilmitis. Zimbabwe will have their highest representation in the Boys U-15 race where the Hellenic Academy quartet of Jordyn Jacobs, Luke Hacker, Luke Steffens and Jayden Young and the Peterhouse Boys duo of Keith Elliott and Mathew Palmer will carry the nation’s hopes.

Under-17 Boys: Matthew Denslow (Hellenic Academy), Marcel Paulser (Peterhouse Boys), Benjamin Wood (Hellenic Academy)

Under-17 Girls: Mikayla Colegrave (Hellenic Academy)

Under-15 Boys: Jordyn Jacobs, Luke Hacker, Luke Steffens, Jayden Young (all Hellenic Academy), Keith Elliott, Mathew Palmer (both Peterhouse Boys)

Under-15 Girls: Erin Elliott (Peterhouse Girls)

Under-13 Boys: George Ascott (Peterhouse Boys)

*Gideon Benade will be representing Zimbabwe in the 2018 Free State African Cup Elite Men’s event taking place over the same weekend at the same venue.
