Chapungu progressed into the first round of the Chibuku Super Cup when they beat Mutare City Rovers after a penalty shootout in a preliminary round football tie played at Ascot Stadium yesterday.

The match had ended in a 2-2 draw in regulation time as both sides fought to book a first round date against FC Platinum and it had to be decided in a shootout that saw the Gweru based side winning 5-3.

Mutare City were first to score on the 20-minute mark through Vialli Tadzoka before Chapungu restored parity 13 minutes later through Brighton Mugoni’s spot kick after Kumbulani Njovo had handled the ball in the box.

They were awarded another penalty in the 73rd minute, but Mugoni failed to convert, as his effort crashed against the cross bar.

Edmore Muzanenhamo then gave Chapungu the lead that was shortlived in the 85th minute as Mutare City equalised a minute later through Jefrey Takunda.

Chapungu coach Rodwell Dhlakama was elated with the win.

“I am happy that we won. It was difficult, but we did it though Mutare City proved to be a bit tough. Now we look forward to the next task against FC Platinum hoping history will repeat itself and we beat them,” said Dhlakama.

His counterpart Ndega Matsika bemoaned his team’s failure to convert their chances for the loss.

“We played well but lost. The team tried their best. Had we converted the chances, we could have won, but we now shift focus to our goal to survive relegation,” he said.
