Socialite and media personality Patience Phiri (pictured below), who will take part in a theatre performance next Friday, says the event would be an opportunity for her to learn.

Phiri will be part of the cast of State of the Nation Vortex, a play which calls for “Zimbabwe to dialogue with itself”.

The play will premiere on Friday and Saturday, starting at 6pm and 3pm respectively at Theatre in the Park in Harare.

The Peter Churu-directed play features Phiri, veteran actor and producer Daves Guzha, Tafadzwa Mutumbwi and award-winning actress Eunice Tava.

The play deals with recent accounts in Zimbabwe, dealing with human rights abuse, social justice, nation building and humanity.

Phiri said she was excited about being part of a rich cast, which consists of seasoned and award-winning artistes and would use the opportunity to grow her theatre brand.

“It’s exciting for me because we play different roles. Hopefully, people who will come to the theatre on Friday and Saturday would relate to the story because we are dealing with the state of the nation as it is, as we have been experiencing in the past few weeks,” she said.

“It’s portraying a Zimbabwean story told by Zimbabweans and putting it out in theatre to start a dialogue so that people can get to talk and discuss what exactly is going on in the country.”

Churu said the play was inspired by the current economic hardships and riots that hit the nation in the past few weeks.

“We have gone through a period of fuel price hikes which led to public protests and riots, which further led to violence and looting and destruction of the little infrastructure, business and form of employment we had as a troubled country,” he said.
