A local non-governmental organisation, Inspire Tutors, will this Saturday host a walkathon at Harare’s Mukuvisi Woodlands aimed at raising funds for children with dyslexia.

The annual event, which will be running under the theme #walk4dyslexia, starts at 8am and ends at 10am. It is open to all citizens and is split into four categories: the 3km, 5km, 8km and 10km walks.

One of the organisers of the walkathon, Tafadzwa Ngosi described the walkathon as one of many fundraising activities that Inspire Tutors was undertaking to raise funds for institutionalised dyslexic children.

“We have held a number of fundraising events since we started, including a family fun day, winter cookout event in 2017, which was a great success in creating awareness for our cause, and last year we held the 2018 walkathon, which was under the banner #dyslexia awareness,” Ngosi said.

She also explained how the organisation had held workshops to raise awareness around the need for support structures for institutionalised children with learning disabilities. The workshops were done in partnership with the Michael Project and Young African Leaders Initiative.

Inspire Tutors’ main priority is to assist institutionalised children with learning disabilities to become independent learners.

The organisation worked with children from Harare Children’s Home, assisting with their fundraising efforts, to expand into other institutions this year.

The organisation is appealing for donations in cash and kind.

Ngosi said the work of volunteers at Inspire Tutors required a lot of patience and care attending to each child’s individual needs. Volunteers’ work includes homework assistance, catering for children’s educational well-being and mentoring.

Inspire Tutors has a volunteering platform where well-wishers and dedicated tutors actively help out and participate indemesttifying the stigma attached to learning disabilities like dyslexia.
