ALPHA Media Holdings (AMH) in partnership with other well-wishers has donated foodstuffs and clothing among other items to assist victims of Cyclone Idai in Chimanimani.

The goods, which were transported to the disaster-hit area on Friday, were handed over at one of the Cyclone Idai “command centres” located at Highlands Presbyterian Church, Harare.

Speaking to Standard Style, AMH MD Kenias Mafukidze said the of benevolence was triggered by the media group’s wish to see “quick restoration of the dignity of life”.

“This quest for meaning in life is what we represent in our papers and we feel obligated to add our voice and resources to all the efforts aimed at assisting those affected by Cyclone Idai,” said Mafukidze.

According to Mafukidze, AMH, publishers of NewsDay, The Standard, The Southern Eye and The Zimbabwe Independent, has earned significant followership over the years by sticking to the pledge of informing in a truthful and professional manner as well as lending a hand towards national development.

“We, therefore, have no choice, but to be involved in communities as they go through not just their successes, but also their pain, hence we felt it was natural for us to use the voice and influence we have to lessen the pain of those affected by this cyclone,” he said.

“We are passionate about the success of our country, so through all our endeavours, publications and multimedia platforms, we strive to empower Zimbabweans to be the masters of their own destiny.”

Apart from the group’s staffers and public contributors, corporates including Lebena Biscuits, Gain Cash & Carry and Woman and Child in Need — a UKbased non-governmental organisation — also handed their donations.

“In moments like this, we feel it is important that we use our privileged position to build ‘Team Zimbabwe’ and come together to confront this affliction,” said Mafukidze. Donation from AMH
