UNITED Kingdom-based music expert Paul Colman has described winners of the Western Vocal Challenge Eisteddfod final competition as having exhibited great quality proving that they can compete on the international stage.

Colman, a renowned music tutor, made the remarks at the Western Vocal Challenge Eisteddfod final competition held on Wednesday at the Harare International School.

“The festival has been outstanding this year, well planned and the standards were remarkably high and of international status,” he said.

Colman said all the competition’s categories were well represented and the contest was tight, an indication of great talent in the country.

The winners said they were ready for the international arena, adding tha the faith expressed by Colman in Zimbabwean talent was humbling.

One of the winners, Yamikani Mandiwanzira, from Chisipite Senior School, attributed her victory to effective leadership at her school.

“This competition is a striking platform for people to use to go up there and really express their passion. Everybody here got the same grade, which is 90% and above, and if you have everybody with same passion and energy it uplifts you into wanting to do more,” she said.

“For my school, it means they have a good foundation and good leaders leading people and it also means I now have that initiative to inspire people through my passion to join in and just do what they love.”

Another winner, Plaxedes James, from Chitungwiza, said she was confident to compete at the international stage.

“I would really like that opportunity, I can’t wait. I am certainly happy for winning and it gives me more confidence going forward,” she said.

Talented Akin Chariga, from Zimbabwe Academy of Music, who got a standing ovation after his performance, said he was praying for more opportunities to showcase his talent.
