A Local driving school, Ring Driving School, was on Friday recognised as the first private driving school in the country to achieve ISO 9001:2015 certification. ISO 9001:2015 is an international standard that specifies requirements for quality management systems.

Speaking at the certification ceremony in Harare on Friday, Transport and Infrastructural Development minister Joel Biggie Matiza, who was represented by a director in the ministry, Joseph Pedzapasi, expressed government’s desire to work with organisations that put the safety of people first.

“Safety is our number one core value as the ministry strives to protect the safety of the travelling public, our employees and the workers who build, operate and maintain our transportation and communication system,” Matiza said.

“We congratulate the driving school for attaining such a world-class standard and I also hear that they have established a customer service department, developed and launched a customer service charter, have held regional customer interactive sessions, held meetings with staff, upgraded their facilities, and commenced the automation of their processes which they launched in December last year.”

Standards Association of Zimbabwe (SAZ) quality assurance director Sebastian Zuze said the certification of Ring Driving School was a culmination of a lot of hard work and dedication.

“If we don’t set standards for ourselves, our family or at work, we are likely to fail to achieve what we want. Setting standards allows us to deliver the desired results,” said Zuze.

“Ring Driving School are doing their things the best way and deserve such recognition. We tend to use unorthodox means to produce results, which we do not achieve at the end of the day.”

Zuze said SAZ spent some time monitoring the operations of Ring Driving School in order to figure out how to improve its quality, which culminated into an audit.

He said the ISO 9001:2015 was internationally accepted standard that defines quality. It sets the criteria for quality management systems and provides the necessary framework to improve operational efficiency, minimise risk and optimise opportunities.

Ring Driving School director Onias Sanangura said the driving school, which was established in 2009, was born out of the need to improve the country’s driving school sector.

“The company’s existence was therefore spurred by the need to create a safe driving environment by imparting skills to prospective drivers through innovation and application of modern technology in driver-training in the country,” Sanangura said.

Ring Driving School offers driving lessons for Class 1, Class 2, Class 3 (motorbikes) and Class 4, including horse and tanker training, as well as oral lessons for provisional driving lessons.

Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe managing director Obio Chinyere and Zimbabwe Republic Police acting spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi applauded Ring Driving School for reaching such a milestone and encouraged other driving schools across the country to follow suit.

“Ring Driving School have set a target and they should now mantain it. It is my hope that all driving schools in the country take a leaf from Ring and get ISO certification,” said Chinyere.

Blessing Shumba, Ring Driving School ambassador, provided entertainment at the ceremony.
