Police in Bulawayo are worried about the increase in rape cases, with a number of them involving relatives.

Acting Bulawayo police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, said between April 21 and 27 out of eight rape cases reported in the city, seven involved family members.

“The age group of those raped is between 15 and 21 years. Some were raped by adults,” she said.

“This is now happening almost every day, which is also worrisome. Six cases happened in the western suburbs and two in the eastern suburbs.”

Msebele said some of the cases involved people that were in relationships. She said teenagers were also falling prey to rape due to exposure to technology and social media.

“Parents should be friendly to their children so that they can detect fast if ever their children have problems,” she said.
