Gweru model Michelle Mupasi (20) was last week crowned Miss Tourism Zimbabwe Midlands province at a colourful ceremony held at King Solomon’s Hotel in Kwekwe.
Mupasi is a second-year student studying for a Bachelor of Science Environmental Science and Health degree at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) in Bulawayo.
The first princess was Maria Makelve (21) from Gweru, a Sociology student at Midlands State University (MSU), and the second princess was Zwoluga Moyo (20), also from Gweru and a Business Management student at MSU.
Miss Tourism Zimbabwe Midlands licence holder Mavis Koslek said this year’s preparations were the toughest ever in her 30 years of hosting provincial eantries.
“With the high cost of living, this year’s preparations were the toughest ever in my three decades of hosting a provincial pageant of that sort,” Koslek said.
“Everything has become expensive especially food, transport and prizes for the contestants.”
She said she had knocked on both small and big doors so that she might find sponsorship, thanks to a few who came on board to assist.

Koslek paid tribute to King Solomon Hotel directors Solomon Matsa and his wife for providing the venue and accommodation for the provincial finals.
Most of the contestants were drawn mainly from institutions such as MSU and Nust.
The night was spiced by entertainment from Midlands province-based artistes.
“I prefer engaging local artistes for such events so that they showcase their talents rather than bringing artistes from Harare who have plenty of opportunities,” Koslek said.
She said she was confident that Mpasi would make it when she competes at the Miss Tourism Zimbabwe finals in Harare in September.
