ZIFA has issued an apology for the way in which Zimbabwe were knocked out of the Africa Cup of Nations 2019. The humiliating exit from the tournament has forced the association to admit that the lessons learned from the defeat will be applied for better performances in the future, which is expected by those who like online sports bet. Zimbabwe were expected to deliver at this tournament considering that they were bringing the so-called Golden Generation.

Zimbabweans were at least expecting their team to reach the knockout stages of the competition, but the team exited the competition without getting a victory even in the group stages. Zimbabwe ended at the bottom of the table with just one goal scored in response to 6 goals conceded.

The 4-0 crushing defeat against DR Congo was the biggest disappointment of the tournament for Zimbabwe, who had overcome the same opponent even during the qualification stages. Congo had lost both their games to Uganda and Egypt. The team was also seen as one of the whipping boys in the competition. This had boosted expectations amongst Zimbabweans ahead of the game, but some of a very poor from the start to finish.

ZIFA statement claimed that the outcome of the AFCON 2019 was indeed a major disappointment. Instead of rolling over this problem, ZIFA has promised that the focus will be switching towards improving the foundations so that successful stories are written in the future. There have been a string of meetings between ZIFA and the players, who have not been happy with the lack of pay from the national team. Even though the squad has the talent to be able to deliver in big tournaments, Zimbabwe were let down by off-field issues ahead of the tournament. The players even refused to take part in training and feature in the match against Egypt. Such was the dissatisfaction with the lack of payment from ZIFA.

There was also a lot of unrest amongst players ahead of the last game against Congo, as they were not happy with some of the payments that had paid out after the talks in the first few weeks of the tournament. There was even a situation when Zimbabwe could have withdrawn from the AFCON finals, as ZIFA officials were in an impasse with the players.

President Mnangagwa did play a key role in rallying behind the players and helping the national team to feature in all group matches as expected. The Warriors have only featured in four AFCON finals in the history and they have never been able to get past the group stages. However, this is the second successive campaign in which the Warriors have been unable to win any group game. Zimbabwe’s last victory at the AFCON finals was in 2006.

A vast majority of the success for Zimbabwe has been in the COSAFA Cup, as they have been champions on six occasions. The team has also finished as runner-up on three occasions. The most recent COSAFA Cup, however, witnessed Zimbabwe finishing third after winning the title in the previous two occasions.
