Heart and Soul tele-radio will, starting tomorrow at 4pm, begin to air Best of the Universities Quiz Challenge in a 13-episode series sponsored by Students and Youth Working on reproductive Health Action Team (Saywhat) and its partners.

The inaugural competition will see students drawn from over 10 tertiary institutions battle it out for top honours on selected topics including sexually-transmitted infections, HIV and Aids, contraception, gender and human rights, environment and sexual reproductive health (SRH) and drug abuse, among others.

In a statement, Saywhat executive director Jimmy Wilford said the purpose of the competition was to analyse knowledge levels of students on a broad range of SRH issues as well as opening up the sensitive dialogue among families.

“The objective is to reinforce accurate sexual and reproductive health information relevant to learners in institutions of higher learning; as well as to harness the uniqueness in behavioural change brought by competition and learning in one space,” said Wilford.

“We are also aiming at creating a rallying point for families to initiate sexual and reproductive health dialogues as they watch the episodes. Further the competition gives students rare skills that will be useful in their future careers.”

In a first of its kind varsity competition, Saywhat is partnered by Ministry of Health and Child Care, Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development and the National Aids Council supported by the Embassy of Sweden in Zimbabwe.

“We have partnered Saywhat for an Action for Choice project, a project that is inspired by a belief in students’ power to make choices about their sexual and reproductive health,” Embassy of Sweden official Mette Sunnergren said.

“We believe that when students’ Sexual and Reproductive Health choices are broadened, there is increased potential for them to excel in other development facets such as education, professional careers and employability.
