Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) will early next year host a global energy conference at a time the region is grappling with an acute shortage of electricity.

AMH said the International Renewable Energy Conference & Expo 2020 set for Victoria Falls between March 11 and 13, will run under the theme: The Future of Energy Is In Renewable Sources.

Key speakers will include Energy minister Fortune Chasi, Ben Rafemoyo from the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe and Ian Mackenzie, the Nyanga Renewable Energy MD.

The organisers said participants will seek to understand value that can be derived from renewable energy.

“The conference will also discuss ways of harnessing the renewable energy,” the organisers said.

“It will explore renewable energy policies and how to improve efficiencies in the African economies as well as establish the impediments in the implementation of power projects on the continent.

“The international conference will attract over 500 high level representatives from across the globe.”

Targeted guests include representatives of governments, financiers, independent power producers and institutional investors, among others.

In May, Zimbabwe introduced an18-hour daily load shedding programme as water levels at Kariba Dam became too low.

According to the Zimbabwe Power Company, as of yesterday only 162 megawatts of electricity were being produced from Kariba Dam against an installed capacity of 1 050MW.

The Hwange thermal power station was producing 380 MW, Munyati (17 MW) and Bulawayo (10 MW) and Harare was producing nothing.

To cover the power deficit, Zesa imports electricity from Mozambique and South Africa, but the utility has been choking under legacy debts.

AMH are publishers of The Standard, Southern Eye, NewsDay and the Zimbabwe Independent.

Zimbabwe’s largest privately owned media house also owns Heart and Soul Broadcasting Services.
