SCOTLAND-BASED striker David Moyo insists he has not given up hope of a maiden Warriors call-up, almost six years after featuring in the Zimbabwe Under-23s’ high-profile international friendly against Morocco in Casablanca and virtually disappearing from the radar until his big move last year.

The forward, 25, has quickly adapted to life in the Scottish Premiership after arriving at Hamilton Academical from St Albans City in the English National League South at the start of the season.

After initially struggling to break into the Hamilton Academical side, Moyo has become a regular at the Scottish top-flight club, who currently sit second from bottom on the log.

His first and only goal for the club thus far — a winner against Motherwell — came in the last game before the winter break and he has kicked on from there featuring regularly for the Accies.

After impressing in his first season in Scotland’s top-flight league, Moyo hopes his club form will go a long way in reviving his international career.

In a recent interview with the Sunday Post, Moyo, who was born in Bulawayo before relocating to England at a young age, said he still has fond memories of his only appearance for the country to date almost six years ago.

During the match where Zimbabwe fielded an Under-23 side, Moyo played in midfield, rather than his favoured position as a forward.

Charlton Athletic forward Macauley Bonne also made his debut for the country in that encounter and scored in a 1-2 defeat for the visitors.

Moyo admits the nature of that Zimbabwe debut gives him another incentive to really get his club career firing in order to get a national team call-up.

He said: “I had played in front of a big crowd before, when I made my debut for Zimbabwe in Morocco in 2014.

“That was a great experience. But I was a lot younger and I didn’t really take it in. I’d love the chance to do it again.

“There are a few from the squad playing in the UK — Marvelous Nakamba is at Aston Villa and doing well.

“All I can do is keep doing what I’m doing, and hope they’re keeping tabs on the fact I’m playing at this level.”

Moyo, who is managed by the Thai Sports Management firm, the same agency which represents Senegalese forward Mame Diouf, started his career at Northampton Town initially as a scholar.

Despite turning professional with the Cobblers, Moyo found first-team opportunities limited and in January 2015 joined Brackley Town after a brief loan spell at St James Park.

The young forward featured almost 100 times for the club before moving to English sixth-tier side Hemel Hempstead Town Football Club, but again found it tough to establish an extended run of games at Vauxhall Road despite some blistering performances.

He signed for St Albans City in July 2018, scoring 15 goals in 49 appearances before earning a trial at Hamilton Academical.
