The huge jump in cases pushed the country’s caseload to 698 with eight deaths.

According to an update by the Health and Child Care ministry last night, 55 of the cases were of Zimbabweans that recently returned from South Africa.

Three had returned from Mozambique, two from the United States and one each from Australia and Zambia, while eight were local infections.

The Harare woman had no history of travel, but had underlying illnesses, the ministry said.

Zimbabwe has been on a lockdown to slow down the spread of Covid-19, a flu-like disease that was first detected in China late last year and has been spreading across the world at an alarming rate.

The country’s response to the pandemic has been hampered by repeated strikes by nurses and doctors protesting against poor working conditions and lack of personal protective equipment.

A fortnight ago health workers went on strike demanding salaries in United States dollars, citing the collapse of the local currency. The government offered its workers US$75 monthly allowances for the next three months, but the offer was rejected by unions.
