Do you remember the days when you were young, hopeful and full of life? When you saw everything through the eyes of possibility and only wished you were a bit taller, bigger, stronger, or more powerful to take the world? Do you ever look back and wonder what happened to that person?

We all come into this life with a positive view of the world. We were excited and imaginative, and we saw the entire universe as our playground. Then somewhere in-between, many seem to lose that optimism for life. Perhaps this stems from telling ourselves that we have to “grow up” and become more realistic. Or perhaps it is caused by those doubts that creep in our heads, making us wonder if we are just not good enough to ever become all those things we dreamt about. Or could it simply be the result of running ourselves ragged trying to meet the demands of those around us? Whatever the cause, we began creating barriers and limitations for ourselves that caused us to fail or give up.

Sometimes we still hear voices from our childhood days that chided us and restrained us from pursuing our dreams. Perhaps we magnified those voices beyond reason to a place of paralysis? Decades later sadly some of those voices are still rehearsed in our subconscious and have created invisible prison walls for us where we dreadfully fear to step out into the unknown.

Overcoming the victim mentality In life we are sometimes dealt with some very tough blows which can leave us wounded, staggering or unsure of who we are or where we want to go. This affects our own personal leadership as we sometimes lose our identity and sense of purpose. These life episodes can leave us feeling like victims who continually need help. In some cases, we end up being there for everyone else but ourselves. Strangely, we can make everyone else around us prosper in their pursuits but ourselves. Are you stuck in a role where you are constantly needing help because you feel you were abused, rejected, divorced, manipulated or neglected? When we look around us, there are so many despondent situations around us that are making a demand of us to arise and pursue our dreams again.

You have what it takes to achieve your dreams You were not created as an afterthought, but you were deliberately created on purpose to exercise the dominion mandate on this earth. I know of so many individuals who have gone through bitter experiences in life and in their endeavours to lead at various levels. Often they become despondent and ask where God was in all their pain and setbacks. I have learnt that as you put your total trust in God through the pain you will come out stronger and fortified confidence.

Confidence is not something that can be learned like a set of rules; confidence is a state of mind. Positive thinking, daily faith affirmations, practice, training, knowledge and surrounding yourself with individuals who can coach you to lead in greatness – this will increase your confidence levels. Confidence comes from feelings of well-being, acceptance of your body and mind and belief in what God has created you to be.

Take action Without action, nothing is possible. Sure, there is chance and chance does happen on occasion, but do you really want to leave your life and your dreams to chance? The number one action you can take right this second is to stop procrastinating. You have to stop putting off till tomorrow what you want done today.

You can never get yesterday, that moment, back again. The actions do not have to be big actions. The complexity of the action is not what matters; it is the action itself that matters. Action propels, it motivates, it stimulates, and it moves you one step closer to your goals and dreams.

Be consistent and diligent It is often said that just about the time someone gives up on their dreams or goals is just the moment those goals and dreams were going to become reality.

Successful athletes don’t train for one day and become the best in their field. Most times these athletes have been practicing, training and honing their craft for years, often times, most of their lives. They are successful because they are consistent and diligent with the same daily activities day in and day out.

So, whatever your means of “getting there,” they have to be done on a daily basis with the same consistency and the same diligence in order for them to become reality.

It will not happen overnight, anything worth obtaining or doing rarely does. It could take years, but the key here is to never give up; giving up should never be an option. You may get discouraged. When this happens, step back, take five, ten minutes or take a day to decompress. Take some time for yourself, do something that fills you with joy. Remember why you started this journey in the first place and you will see your attitude and spirit change, and you will be revitalised.

Be flexible in your approach There are many, many ways of getting to where you want to go or where you want to be. You may find that a certain set of actions that you have grown accustomed to doing daily suddenly do not seem to be working or they do not seem to “feel” right any longer. There are no set in stone rules that you have to abide by or follow to be successful. If you see that something is not working any longer take some time to re-evaluate what you could do to change it. The Covid-19 era may have come as a major curve ball to life as we knew it, but it did not cancel the year. Take some time to readjust your plan and pursue your dreams. There is life post Covid-19.

There will be people that tell you your dream is impossible. Don’t give up, because it’s fun to prove the world wrong. When you accomplish your dream, share it with the world and let them know you are amazing for not giving up.

So dream big and don’t be afraid to chase your dreams no matter where they take you. You are never too old to dream and never too old to chase a dream.
