Bulawayo songstress Qeqeshiwe Mntambo says she felt that her song was going to be a hit when she received the instrumentation from producer Skaiva.

The duo have a new song titled Kukhona, which is doing well on radio stations and many have tipped it to be a nominee for the outstanding house music award at this year’s edition of the Roil Bulawayo Arts Awards.

“The song is about hope and the message is ‘better days are coming’. When I sang the song it was early days of lockdown and I felt darkness and wondered if artistes would survive being indoors when their source of income is being out there performing for people. I felt that dark moment passing and people rejoicing again,” Qeqe told Standard Style.

“The idea of the song came after I was mugged. I lost my property and mobile phone and I was offline for some time. The message is about what you feel in the future, feeling great things in the way and to take a lighter approach to life.”

Qeqe said she knew the single would be a hit the moment she received the instrumentation.

“I asked Skaiva to make an instrumental and he did. The moment he sent me the beat I knew it was going to be a banger as I connected with the instrumental at fist hearing. It wasn’t hard to do it as I connected with his soul and my soul at once. I forced him for this collaboration,” she said.

“I had never worked with Skaiva, we had always talked about the collaboration since way back. So after he made a beat I fell in love with it and quickly jumped on it. I chose to work with him because his beats have a soulful element that relates to me and his music speaks to me.

“Working with Skaiva was the best experience ever, he is very creative and strives to bring out the best out of every second of work. Definitely, we will work together in future projects, for now fans should expect a video of Kukhona that we are working on.”

Qeqe is a two-time NAMA award-winning actress while Skaiva is a multi award-winning producer.
