Award-winning gospel musician Togarepi Chivaviro is set to launch music awards to benefit mainly budding artistes.

The awards — dubbed Ebenezer Budding Gospel Music Awards (EBGOMA) — will be held at the launch of another lucrative initiative called Ebenezer Talent Scouting (EBTASC) with preparations already underway.

Speaking from his base in the United States, Chivaviro said the intiatives are part of his “retirement package” to the gospel music industry.

“There is a time when you say, I have done it all, I did my best and I took heed of God’s calling. I have been propping up my son Tinashe, but I feel I need to do something big for the talented artistes, hence these initiatives. I am slowing down in music, hence coming up with projects as a way of giving back to the community,” he said.

The husky-voiced musician, popularly known for the hit song Ebenezer —Tiri Munyasha, said the awards would be held on December 22.

“On the issue of talent-scouting, I have since engaged popular producers like Blessing Masanga, Charles Ayibeki and Lyton Ngolomi to offer young gospel musicians to record at least a single. Whatever happens after that we do not know, but at least we would have assisted someone,” he said.

“The budding gospel awards will be entered by budding musicians with less than two albums. I have since engaged churches and individuals to assist in coming up with such a vibrant event. For a start, we are thinking of 15 categories with each winner walking away with prize money and a trophy. If all goes well, we are looking forward to host the awards on December 22.”

With close to 20 albums in his career, Chivaviro is supporting his son Tinashe, who is already making waves on the gospel music scene.

The Matishamisa singer has since relocated to the US to further his studies.
