BULAWAYO’s Centre for Innovation and Technology (CITE), an online news platform, has partnered with artistes and comedians in a project titled ‘Gags Galore’ to produce skits every week.
According to CITE director Zenzele Ndebele, the project is funded to the tune of US$25 000.
“We partnered with artistes, mostly comedians after realising that they are going through a difficult time because of Covid-19. CITE is going to spend US$25 000 working with artistes as a way of helping them,” Ndebele said.
“We work with artistes, especially comedians, mainly to highlight or talk about social issues in the community, corruption, human rights abuses during lockdown, issues that CITE or artistes think can be discussed.”
Ndebele said the project seeks to ensure artistes put food on the table following the Covid-19-induced suspension of public shows.
“You realise that from last year, artistes have not been able to perform in public because of the lockdown and we know that artistes need to survive. They are struggling and as CITE we thought why not do something in partnership with them so that they can get something out of it,” Ndebele said.
“So the artistes are getting a bit of money for performing. We are also working with artistes using art as a vehicle to talk about issues that are happening in the community. The show features a number of comedians such as Ntando Van Moyo , Mandla , Clive Chigubhu, Zenzo Nyathi and Madlela to name a few.
