Organisers of the second edition of the Bulawayo Arts Festival are embarking on a nationwide tour that seeks to search for talent and performers that can be considered to be part of the festival.

Themed We Own Winter-WOW, the festival is scheduled for June 2 to 5 in Bulawayo.

Some of the events will be for a physical audience whilst others will be recorded live, but all the events and programmes will be streamed live on the BAF TV channel on YouTube.

Places that they are visiting include Gwanda, Plumtree, Murewa, Harare, and the resort city of Victoria Falls.

The Bulawayo Day on June 1 will pave way for the fiesta that will run from June 2 to June 5.

The Bulawayo Day seeks to celebrate the city’s history and commemorate the day Bulawayo was named a city.

“The BAF team will visit the country’s provinces to identify diverse content for the festival, together with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe offices in those areas. This opens up the festival to the nation at large and will see the towns and cities of Plumtree, Gwanda, Mutare, Murewa, Harare, Kwekwe, Hwange and Victoria Falls taking part in this year’s edition.

“BAF organisers are well aware that Covid-19 has changed a lot of what can be done within the creative sector, but they are rearing to go, and ready to showcase the city as a cultural capital of Zimbabwe by running a hybrid festival for both virtual and physical audiences — within the Covid-19-stipulated regulations for gatherings, which has become the new way of doing the business of the arts,” reads a statement.

Last year’s edition had to be held virtually after the banning of public events due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

Last year’s performers were Selmor Mtukudzi, the late Cal Vin, Ntando Van Moyo, Vuyo Brown, Nkwali, Thandy Dlana, Jeys Marabini, Western Cuzins, Msizkay, Ngoma iNgoma and Vokal Ex.  Theatrical productions included Vagina Monologues, Blood Tongue and Bloom.

Dance groups such as Iyasa, Super Geeks, Thandanani Women’s Ensemble and Iluba Lemvelo also graced the stage.
