DOZENS of elderly people in one of the wards in Kusile district, Matabeleland North province, have for several years been denied government food aid because they are perceived as supporters of the opposition MDC Alliance, Southern Eye has learnt.

It is alleged that they have lost hope of receiving food aid, which is distributed by the Department of Social Welfare.

Their councillor, Reuben Gabadela (MDC Alliance) said Zanu PF members hijacked a government programme and denied opposition members food aid.

“It has been going on for many years as Zanu PF members abuse the facility.

He said the issue had been reported several times to relevant authorities, including that of the Lupane district development co-ordinator (DDC).

Lupane DDC Ennety Sithole, however, said she had not received reports of politicisation of food aid in that area, saying those that felt excluded should engage the Department of Social Welfare.

“The list of beneficiaries is compiled by the Department of Social Welfare which is responsible for making assessments of deserving cases.

“That particular case has not reached me as yet, but people are free to take their issues to the department if they feel unfairly excluded,” said Sithole.— TellZim
