Bosso win in slow start

BULAWAYO CHIEFS . . . 0

HIGHLANDERS . . . . . . . 1

HIGHLANDERS kicked off the defence of their Chibuku Super Cup title with an unconvincing show despite a narrow win over Bulawayo Chiefs in a match played at Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo yesterday.

Although Highlanders were dominant in the first half, their forwards struggled to turn that superiority into goals as they could not break through the Chiefs defence well marshalled by captain Malvern Mkolo.

Despite failing to impose themselves in this match amid high expectations from their multitude of fans who have endured a long wait to see their team in action due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictios, Bosso scored the only goal that saw them collect maximum points in their bid to win the biggest knock out football tournament in the country.

Divine Mhindirira swung a cross into the danger zone and an unmarked Washington Navaya, lurking in the area, made no mistake with a superb diving header.

However, Chiefs took control in the second half following the introduction of Antwi Samuel and Gift Chikosa.

They threatened their more illustrious opponents with a series of raids hoping to level the scoreline.

They could have been rewarded for their relentless attack when Samuel picked Gift Gumbo on the left, who delivered a lovely cross, but Mkolo missed a headed opportunity.

Highlanders coach Mandla Mpofu said his team was work in progress and believed they would improve with the progression of the tournament.

Bulawayo Chiefs mentor Thulani Sibanda, on the other hand, said their biggest let down was that they were too respectful for Bosso  in the first half and could have produced a good result  had they been ambitious from the first whistle.

This result means the Bulawayo giants trail Chicken Inn, who lead the Group 2 standings after their 2-0 win over Bulawayo City in the opening match of the tournament on Saturday.
