Finally, the UEFA EURO Championship is just around the corner, and we can start preparing for the first game. The tournament was originally set to be held last year but got pushed to 2021 due to the pandemic. The EURO Championship gathers the European countries national football team in the prestigious fight for the title, Europe’s best football team. It is more than just a football tournament, people from all over the world are joining together to watch the event and the Europeans are both hoping their countries team win. Multiple hosting cities

The championship has been played the last 60 years but is now making a first-ever change to its set up.  Previously, there have only been one country and city that has hosted the UEFA EURO Championship. However, this year the championship will be held in multiple cities, to decrease the amount of people gathering in one place at the same time. This is good news for many people, that will have the pleasure of watching the exciting games in their home country. No less than 11 cities will partake in hosting the world-renowned event. Here are where the different games will be played:

  • The final, semi-final, two rounds of 16 games and three group games: London, England at the Wembley Stadium.
  • Six group games and one quarterfinal: Saint Petersburg, Russia in Saint Petersburg Stadium.
  • Three group games and one quarter final: Baku, Azerbaijan at Baku Olympic Stadium, Munich, Germany at Football Arena Munich and Rome, Italy at Olimpico in Rome
  • Three group games and one round of 16 game: Amsterdam, Netherlands at Johan Cruijff ArenA, Bucharest, Romania National Arena Bucharest, Budapest, Hungary at Puskás Aréna, Copenhagen, Denmark at Parken Stadium, Glasgow, Scotland Hampden Park and Seville, Spain at Stadium La Cartuja Sevilla
African players in the European Championship

While the tournament only contains national football teams from European countries, there are several players with African decent that will partake in the matches. N’Golo Kanté plays for the French national team but is of Mali decent. He was born in Paris and has also played for Leicester, where he joined the team in victory at during the 2015/16 Premier League.

Romelu Lukaku have ancestors from Congo, but have always represented his native country, Belgium. He is considered to be the most feared goal scorer on the planet and have played for Juventus alongside Ronaldo and Ibrahimović. German player Antonio Rüdiger has family in Sierra Leone and have impressed many with his accomplishments on the German national team and as a Chelsea player.

When it was announced that the UEFA suspended the EURO 2020 a whole year, football fans all over the continent where highly disappointed. However, this meant something to look forward to in 2021, and now we are happy to see the first match get kicked off next Friday.
