Diversified group Barmlo Group of Companies last week partnered local musicians and creatives for a charity and career guidance event at Chongogwe High School in Chivi, Masvingo province.
Among the creatives that took part in the school furniture and books donation handover coupled with a career guidance programme for students was comedian and motivational speaker Nigel “Slick Pastor” Maritinyu, Afro-fusion musician Feli Nandi, musician Ropafadzo Sakala, advertising and creative agency director Takemore Mazuruse of Esteem Communications and YaFM radio presenter Auntie Beu.
Barmlo Group CEO Banabasi Marambire told Standard Style that the event was an apt initiative aimed at fostering excellence in students and supporting the local education system towards a formalised economy.
“We are a brand for the people and by the people and we always find ways to give back to the community,” Marambire said.
“Being a former student of Chongogwe High School, I decided to donate 20 desks and chairs plus 60 copies of my lifebook titled The Herdboy.
“I then invited local creatives from Harare and Zvishavane to come and offer some career guidance speeches.”
The event ran under the theme Equiping today’s student for a formalised economy where education is central to personal development and economic growth.

One of the speakers at the event Nigel Maritinyu thanked Barmlo Group of Companies for the noble initiative aimed at promoting a formalised economy.
“Education is an important tool in breaking the poverty cycle and I am humbled to be part of this noble initiative by Barmlo Group,” Maritinyu said.
“We may not be having an entirely formal economy at the moment, but its imperative that we equip the new generation for a formalised economy. The possibilities are too many.”
Afro-fusion musician Feli Nandi, who collaborated with Trevor Dongo on Marambire’s musical depiction of his life story titled Mufudzi Wemombe, said there was a world to conquer and the students must explore all available options.
“My message to you is that you are all special in your different ways. Pursue excellence and work hard to achieve good grades,” Feli Nandi said.
“For those of you who are creatively gifted, don’t shy away from your talents. Nobody knew I was a good musician until someone discovered, but look at me now.”
Feli Nandi, who is also an entrepreneur and accomplished fashionista, pledged a designer ankara jacket for the school head.
“The good work we have seen at this school is all testimony of good leadership and I would want to salute the school head for his depth,” she said.
“I am, therefore, pledging a designer ankara jacket to the school head.
“This is my appreciation of the good work he is doing nurturing the future leaders at this school.”
Marambire and his wife also pledged tuition fees for 10 brilliant students at the school as a way to promote excellence.
