Masango returns to stage with hard-hitting solo play

Eunice Ratidzo Tava

Zimbabwean actress Edith Masango is set to captivate theatre lovers once again as she headlines a powerful new solo production titled “Muchazondida”, premiering next Friday, at Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre in Harare.

The emotionally charged play, written by Masango and co-written by Special Matarirano and Fungai Chinogaramo, explores themes of pain, resilience and the human need for acceptance.

Directed by award-winning theatre practitioner Eunice Ratidzo Tava, “Muchazondida” dives deep into the psychological and emotional struggles of a woman navigating trauma, confinement and society’s harsh judgements.

Masango, who also stars as the sole cast member, delivers a gripping performance in a role that demands vulnerability, intensity and emotional depth.

“For some time I’ve been  very quiet, been off from both stage and screen but I have always been engaging with some creatives behind the scenes in creating projects that give focus to persons with disabilities and it happened that an offer to direct this particular play came and I accepted,” Tava ssaid.

“I have always challenged myself to take up risks. It is not an easy experience working with such persons if you are to achieve best results  but it takes a lot of patience, time and resources. and Edith has just proven that despite these physical challenges they can break the barriers and still contribute to the transformation of our societies in a positive way.

“Edith’s positive attitude works as a powerful tool in approaching and dealing with her real life experiences.

“I did not hesitate to accept the offer to direct this play as this is now my second production working with her after Narratives from the Dark set the path.

“Directing this production is a natural extension of my ongoing collaboration with Edith and I have got to a point where I understand her strengths and vulnerabilities.”

Tava said she took it as an honour to accept the directorial reins once more, knowing that Masango was a superstar and together they could turn the stories of persons with disabilities into a universal anthem of triumph.

The poster’s haunting imagery — showing Masango behind bars — hints at the play’s central struggle: a woman who feels trapped not only by circumstances, but by the world’s failure to understand her.

Produced by Special Matarirano with Enerst Nyatanga as production manager, the play is supported by Theatre in the Park, SSADZA (Swiss Support to Arts Development in Zimbabwe) and Vaima Arts Trust, organisations committed to elevating local theatre and nurturing home-grown talent.

With admission set at an accessible US$5, the production team hopes to draw a wide audience eager to experience an authentic Zimbabwean narrative brought to life through raw performance and sharp storytelling.

The play’s title, “Muchazondida” — loosely translated as “You will love me” — hints at a haunting plea for recognition, acceptance and redemption.

Theatre lovers can expect a moving story that confronts social issues while showcasing Masango’s growing artistic range.
