DOZENS of Zimbabwe’s senior dancers are performing in the annual Starlight Dancing season in Harare which started on October 1 and ends October 5.

Presented by the Dance Trust of Zimbabwe, the 2008 Starlight Dancing show features a range of dance types —— from acrobatic, ballet and contemporary to hip hop, jazz and tap, and also featuring jazz and line dancing.

DTZ chair Eve Stranix said the objective of this annual dance extravaganza was to enable all senior dancers to perform in front of an audience.

Students from the dance schools run by Margan Bower, Mitzi Carruthers, June Cloete, Eileen Fleet, Faye Jackson and Carol Henchie will perform, as will participants in a new DTZ dance training course and dancers from the DTZ Outreach programme for disadvantaged students.

“Clare Hingeston has choreographed a fun number and Zimbabwe’s best-known male dancer, Matthias Julius, has also directed some numbers and will also dance,” said Ms Stranix.

“The instructors of the Body and Soul exercise classes held at the Ballet Centre will perform a routine and the Mabelreign Boot Scooters will show us how line dancing is done. Members of the National Ballet companies will perform numbers choreographed by Natalie Bradbury, Nikki Carter and Christie Clayton. This production will provide a high level of entertainment for the whole family and will show that dance is very much alive and well in Zimbabwe.”

Audiences may bring their own picnics and chairs, as usual. Tickets may be bought at the gate or booked in advance from the Ballet Centre, adjacent to the Reps Theatre car park.
