ZIMBABWE rugby flyer Wensley “Wes” Mbanje has made a breakthrough into South Africa’s premier domestic competition, the Currie Cup.

Prolific winger Mbanje made his debut in the First Division of the competition for the East Rand-based Falcons —— known as Valke in Afrikaans —— against the Griffons on July 11, scoring a gutsy try albeit in a losing cause.

On his debut, he played against fellow countryman and veteran Currie Cup flyhalf Kennedy Tsimba, who is in the twilight of his career at Griffons.

Mbanje has been the Zimbabwe Sevens team’s most consistent player on the IRB international sevens circuit for four years.

The 27-year-old speed merchant from Bulawayo has, however, not been a regular feature for the Sables. His last international coming in a World Cup qualifier away to Namibia last year. —— Sports Writer.
