According to media reports from Maputo, Sadc was last night expected to hold a special summit after the inauguration which would also examine the situation in Madagascar.
The summit took place two days before Zanu PF and the two MDC formations’ negotiators resume talks aimed at finding a solution to the outstanding issues of the global political agreement signed in September 2008.
“The objective is to discuss security in the region,” a Mozambican foreign affairs official, Francisco Siueia, was quoted as saying.
Leaders from Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia are expected to attend.
A spokesman for South African President Jacob Zuma, who is facilitator of the Zimbabwe talks, confirmed the meeting would focus on Zimbabwe and Madagascar.
“The chairman of the troika (the Sadc organ on politics, defence and security) will brief the summit on the progress thus far in terms of the situation in Zimbabwe as well as Madagascar,” said Vincent Magwenya, Zuma’s spokesperson. — AFP-Sapa.
