BY ELIZABETH NDHLOVU-DUMBRENI PAMUZINDA, a Harare-based marimba outfit, is set to represent Zimbabwe and the  African continent at the International Folk Dance and Music festival in New Dehli, India.

The group, which is made up of 10 members, plays traditional music fu-sing marimba, mbira, ngoma, hosho and acoustic guitars.Michael Kamunda, the group’s artistic director and choreographer, said they would perform in various places in the Indian capital for two weeks starting January 14.

It would be the third time for Pamuzinda to tour Asia.

“We are going to represent Zimbabwe and Africa at large at the festival.

“There are 18 international groups drawn from across the globe, 24 groups from India, and we are the only group from Africa,” Kamunda said. The festival’s goal is to enrich cultural values through performing arts.”

Kamunda, a multi-skilled musician who once worked with the country’s mbira queen, Stella Chiweshe for more than a decade said Pamuzinda has been rehearsing for more than a month and promised that the group would display its finest dances at the festival.

“We are going to perform some traditional dances and music drawn from different provinces of Zimbabwe.

“We will perform chinyambera (hunters’ dance), hoso/amabhiza (horse da-nce), muchongoyo (war dance) and jerusalem/mbende (lovers’ dance),” said Kamunda.

Kamunda said one of the Indian festival organisers spotted the team’s rare talent while they were performing in Germany late last year and eventually requested them to take part in the New Dehli traditional festival.

To date, the group has recorded four musical albums.

Two of them are local productions while Padare 1 and Live in Dortmund were recorded in Belgium and Germany respectively.

Soon after the Indian trip, Pamuzinda is expected to go on another three-month summer tour to Europe.
