ALPHA Media Holdings (AMH) will this year sponsor the annual advertising awards — the Ngoma Awards.

AMH publishes NewsDay, the Standard, and the Zimbabwe Independent newspapers. The awards will now be branded the AMH Ngoma Awards.

The competition is open to all advertising  and promotional communications produced and utilised during the calendar year 2010 and entry can be made by any person or organisation involved in advertising communications, including advertising agencies, design houses, publishers and advertisers.

The Ngoma Awards were launched in 2005, several years after the demise of the previous annual awards competition. Organised by Meet The Challenge conferences, it is endorsed by the Advertising and Publicity Club and other associations involved in the advertising communications industry.

Entries should be in a range of categories, which include print, broadcast, electronic, outdoor, direct and other areas of communication, and the overall award, sponsored by MultiChoice Zimbabwe and named the So Much More Award, is for the campaign of the year.

Judging of the entries by a panel of local judges and an international judge will take place during February and March, with the awards handed out at a gala dinner on Friday April 1. The following day will see a post-event workshop run by the international judge and inclusive of information and ideas on international trends in advertising, as well as recommendations based on the experience of the entries made to competition.

Membership of the judging panel remains confidential until the awards event to allow the members to undertake their work without possible prejudice.

“All participants receive feedback, which we believe will assist in the improvement of the standard of advertising communication in this country,” said Judy Macdonald, one of the organisers and recipient of entries.

“The objective of the competition and all activities associated with it is quite simple: to encourage and reward excellence in advertising communication and to ensure world-class practice in this business right here in Zimbabwe.”
