Controversy surrounds appointments at Zifa

Sport
Own correspondent The “whom do you know” appointments at the Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) have added another chapter with revelations that a business partner of Warriors team manager Christopher Chitindi was appointed kit manager of the Zimbabwe team.

Sources at Zifa have revealed that new Warriors kit manager Gift Mabvudza was appointed on the recommendations of Chitindi. The two jointly own Perfect Bakery situated in the Graniteside Area in Harare.

Mabvudza was appointed in place of Joshua Khumalo who was in charge when the Warriors hosted Cape Verde at the National Sports Stadium in an African Cup of Nations qualifier.

However, he found himself without a job a few weeks before the team’s departure for the three-week African Nations Championship currently underway in Sudan.

The Warriors kit manager is responsible for making sure that all the equipment, material, and requirements for the Warriors for training and for matches are available and are in order Mabvudza has no football experience and has not held any position in Zimbabwean football, even at lower division level. The new kit manager is in Sudan for the African Nations Championships where there are huge financial spin-offs, should the Warriors go further in the tournament.

The Warriors played Niger in their opening group match yesterday and will face Ghana on February 9 before winding off their campaign with a match against South Africa on February 13.

Khumalo confirmed he was removed from his position but no official communication had been made apart from reading in the press that a new kit manager had been appointed.

Zifa acting Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Mashingaidze said although the board appointed the national coach, they acted on recommendations in the appointment of other members of the technical staff.
