Have fun exercising in Mukuvisi Woodlands

Standard People
Mukuvisi Woodlands turned 30 last year. This beautiful area of typical miombo woodland and wetland is home to plentiful game that may catch your eye as you pass by on Glenara Avenue, heading for the airport or industrial sites. It’s a peaceful sight in the midst of our normal city bustle, and like nearby Haka Game Park, has been set aside as a Green Belt and is leased from Council by its passionate caretakers.

A number of environmental organisations are headquartered here — Zambezi Society and Wildlife and Environment Zimbabwe being just two. There’s an Education Centre, and thousands of school children come through annually to learn about their environment and the need to preserve it.

Last Sunday with around 60 others, I took up a Woodlands’ invitation circulated via email to enjoy parts of this lovely area one would not normally see unless accompanied by a guide. This, the third Woodlands Walk and Cross Country Run, was as successful as the first two, launched last year.

Officials have now decided to offer this delightful nature treat on the last Sunday of every month. If you’d like a taste of the wilderness in our capital city, get your diary out. You can set off on your woodland adventure any time from 6 to 8 am and even bring your dog on a lead.

The well marked circular routes (long grass carefully cleared) take you through pristine woodland down to the crystal clear waters of the river and back again. While the rest of my group which included young children opted for an 8 km walk, I chose to run the 10 km circuit twice — great preparation for the Two Oceans Trail Run!

The scenery was beautiful, birds plentiful and we spotted game too.  Breakfast rolls and some time at the game viewing platform at the end, made a great Sunday morning outing, and this monthly event seems certain to draw more city dwellers to enjoy this natural treasure — right on our doorsteps.
