Mukamba ready for the big time

BY ALBERT MARUFU DENVER Mukamba’s dream had always been to don the famous blue and white strip of Dynamos and when former Kiglon coach Lloyd Mutasa invited him, he could not wait.

Not even pleas from his cousin Clive Kawinga to join him at CAPS United could persuade him to change his mind.

Now as the start of the 2011 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season draws nearer, all eyes at DeMbare are on national Under-20, Under-23 and Warriors midfielder Mukamba who has turned on some sublime performances.

However, just merely looking at him, one can be misled into thinking that the Highfield-born youngster is a weakling. A conversation with him however, would leave one in no doubt that here is a star in the making.

Mukamba was in action when Zimbabwe booted Zambia out of the All Africa Games with two goals from both legs and was touted to lift the spirits for the country at Chan in Sudan, albeit with little success.

He has, however, announced his comeback on the domestic scene with some polished performances for his new side that is giving Dynamos fans hope that this could be their year after being the PSL’s bridesmaids for the past two seasons.

Mukamba, who wears size seven Adidas boots, seems to be a favourite for the right side link in the Dynamos midfield that also includes his sidekick, the talented Archford Gutu.

Dynamos’ longtime enemies Highlanders were the young midfielder’s latest casualties when he curled in a corner into the nest, leaving goalkeeper Ariel Sibanda shell-shocked.

To many a soccer fan, this may have come as a surprise, but to those who follow the youngster, like Dynamos coach Lloyd Mutasa, this came as no surprise at all.

“He has scored many like that at training sessions and we expect more from him in the league this season. He is a player of sober habits who is going to go far. He only has to work on his match fitness,” Mutasa said.

However, his detractors would point to his subdued performance in the Chan championships in Sudan where Zimbabwe finished with three points after defeating Ghana, but losing to South Africa.

“Injuries troubled me in Sudan. I could have played better,” he said.

Mukamba, who was brought up by his father Owen following the death of his mother Petunia Kawinga (sister to CAPS United striker Clive Kawinga’s mother) showed the rest of the country his potential last season while turning out for modest club Kiglon.
