Showdown looms at Bulls

BY BRIAN NKIWANE A showdown is looming between Castle Lager premiership side Motor Action and Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) over the reinstatement of axed defender Sam Mutenheri.

The Mighty Bulls fired Mutenheri and midfielder William Kupera after their Champions League exit in March at the National Sports Stadium, accusing them of being the ringleaders of a revolt over allowances and bonuses.

After being axed Mutenheri approached FUZ, who wrote to Eric Rosen, the owner of Motor Action ordering him to reinstate the player.Paul Gundani, the FUZ secretary general said Motor Action violated the labour statutes by playing Mutenheri in Cup matches despite the expiry of his contract, which meant they had re-employed him.

“We are looking at a situation whereby (Sam) Mutenheri’s contract expired on December 31 last year. Mutenheri continued to play for Motor Action in a number of matches that also included cup games, which means they re-entered into another contract.

“The other thing that Motor Action did was to make Mutenheri sign a letter that enabled them to register the defender for the Champions League even though he was out of the contract.

“According to labour laws, such a situation means that the two parties have renewed the previous contract with full benefits, that is salaries and allowances equal to the previous contract,” Gundani said.

When contacted for comment, Mutenheri said he was waiting to be recalled for training.

In yet another development, Motor Action have signed a memorandum of agreement with Dynamos to transfer Kupera to the Harare giants at a value of US$10 000.The Mighty Bulls have agreed to pay the player his March salary and his outstanding due of US$1 000 which Rosen said was going to be paid against his release fee. From the US$10 000 transfer fee, Kupera is going to get US$2 000. The remaining US$8 000 shall be paid to the Mighty Bulls boss in three instalments.

According to the letter in possession of Standardsport, in an event that the payment is not affected by the due dates, it would attract an interest of 20% per annum on outstanding amount.

Meanwhile, three league fixtures are lined up for today. Motor Action will play Dynamos at Rufaro. Highlanders collide with Masvingo United at Mucheke while Kiglon plays Hwange at Gwanzura.
