Mendez dismisses Nyasha in finals

BY BRIAN NKIWANE Chilean international wheelchair tennis player Robinson Mendez dismissed Zimbabwe’s number one Nyasha Mharakurwa in the finals of the Harare Open — an NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tournament held in Harare yesterday.

Mendez beat Mharakurwa 6-2, 6-0 to win the title. Mharakurwa who is the best wheelchair tennis player in the country beat Samson Muroiwa, 6-1, 6-0 on Friday to progress to the final against Mendez.

 

This is the second time that Muroiwa has been dismissed in the semi-finals of the tournament by Mharakurwa.

His opponent Mendez beat his fellow countryman Christian Aranda 6-2, 6-1 to storm into the final.

In the women’s category, Moline Muza beat Juliet Mutanhiri 6-4, 6-4 to win the ladies singles title.

Muza had dispatched Dorcas Hwatira 6-4, 6-1 to set-up a final against Mutanhiri who had seen off Margaret Shate 6-3, 6-0 in the semi-finals on Friday.

In the men’s doubles category, the Chileans Aranda and Mendez beat Mharakurwa and Muroiwa 6-0, 6-0 to win the title.  The Chilean combination had seen off Collin Makwanya and Ian Attifield 6-1, 6-0 in the semi final to set-up a final against Mharakurwa and Muroiwa who had united to dispatch Rangarirai Chiware and Godfery Ndlovu 6-0,6-0.

In the ladies doubles category, Muza and Mutanhiri emerged winners after dispatching Gino Vundhla and Shate 6-1, 6-1 in the finals.
