Karuru wants out of French club

Sport
BY FANUEL VIRIRI ZIMBABWE international Ovidy Karuru has expressed disappointment at being dropped from the US Boulogne starting line-up and is contemplating leaving the the French side.

The 22-year-old former Gunners player who has had limited appearances at the team since joining the team in June 2009, has for the first time publicly revealed that he is unhappy about getting limited game time.

The player, who is part of the Zimbabwe Warriors squad for the Nations Cup encounter against Mali on June 5 at the National Sports Stadium, has also taken a dig at US Boulogne manager Michel Estevan.

Karuru is not particularly happy with Estevan for leaving him out of the team despite scoring in the two-all draw against Grenobles a fortnight ago. The side went on to lose 3-2 against Grenobles last Friday in the reverse match in which Karuru did not feature.

The player’s appearances for Bouglone do not look good for an international player itching to move to some of the top leagues in Europe. US Boulogne were relegated from Ligue 1 in the 2009/10 season.

Karuru has made 24 appearances in US Boulogne’s  35 league matches in the 2010/11 seasons. Karuru came from the bench in 10 matches and has been substituted seven times. He sat on the bench in 10 matches and has scored three goals.

Karuru came out in the open saying that he was fed up by the treatment he is receiving in France and said on a social networking site that he was contemplating hitting the coach before withdrawing his statement.

“KuFrance hakuna soccer kune nhabvu chaiyo, zvakaoma wena munhu unotamba 90 minutes wogohwesa next game wotsvairwa muteam kana pabench chaipo (You play ninety minutes in a game and go on to score but you don’t get a place in the next game, not even on the bench,” Karuru said.

“What I can, I do but I am bored because my agent had secured a contract for me next season because he wants me to play all the time but the club said ‘No’. They want me to stay here,” he said.

Karuru is one of the few Zimbabwean players that have managed to break into the lucrative and highly competitive league in France after being spotted by US Boulogne scouts at the African Nations Championships in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire in 2009. Karuru was named in the All-Star Team at the maiden African Nations Championship finals in Abidjan.

Karuru, an attacking midfielder plucked from Masvingo United by Gunners, was named as one of the best 17 players at the Nations Championship finals.

Although Karuru did not make the first 11 in the poll for the team of the tournament, he was good enough to get a place on the substitutes’ bench. This was quite an achievement given 184 players, drawn from eight countries, took part in the finals.

OVIDY Karuru was one of the six substitutes, in the All-Star Team, named by Confederation of African Football (CAF). Karuru was outstanding in the match against Ghana and capped a man-of-the-match performance with the opening goal — heading home after just four minutes.

The Black Stars drew 2-all with Zimbabwe. Karuru’s name went into the history books for scoring the fastest goal at the Nations Championships. Norman Maroto, who scored just two minutes in the same championship against South Africa in the opening match, broke this record this year.

The Warriors lost the match 2-1. Karuru was born and bred in Masvingo.  He started playing for Division Two side called Red Devils before moving to Division One side Shooting in 2005.  He played for two seasons and moved to Masvingo United in 2007. Gunners signed him in 2008.
