Kaseke left in the cold

BY OUR STAFF Zimbabwe Tourism Authority chief executive Karikoga Kaseke has been left in the cold following his superiors’  “consensus” that his decision to dethrone Miss Personality Zimbabwe, Lungile Mathe, was hurried.

Mathe was dethroned last month after she was accused of putting the image of the pageant into disrepute by engaging in indecent activities.

Following a statement from Tourism minister, Walter Mzembi, to the effect that there should be “a fresh look at the matter” that would involve bringing together the model, ZTA management and a select committee of the ZTA board, board chairperson Mara Hativagoni has added her voice to the matter.

“I think that decision (to dethrone Mathe) was hurriedly made. There were supposed to be serious investigations into the matter and it should have been resolved amicably,” said Hativagoni.

“Nothing has been communicated to me officially and I am just reading about it in newspapers. I hope the fresh look into the matter will bring a fair judgement.”

On Thursday Mzembi maintained that the matter would be resolved to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.

“We will issue another statement when everything has been resolved. It could have been done by now but the model is in South Africa. As soon as she returns, we will look at the issue and come to a balanced conclusion,” said Mzembi.

Kaseke could not be reached for comment as he was said to be in South Africa but an official at ZTA was adamant that the investigative process had been fair.

“She received several verbal warnings about her conduct because she had been caught on the wrong side of our code of ethics several times. We regularly received complaints from our Bulawayo office where she was attached and she was warned accordingly,” said the official.

“After the last incident we had no option but to write to her informing her about her dethronement.”

Sources at the tourism authority revealed that sponsors of the prizes that Mathe forfeited when she was dethroned were willing to reimburse her in the event that she is reinstated.

A reinstatement would be further embarrassment to Kaseke following a public apology that he made to Mathe for calling her a prostitute.
