JOHANNESBURG — South Africa will likely lower its May 2010-April 2011 season maize estimates due to lower yields in some parts of the country, a survey showed on Friday.

The average estimate of seven trading houses showed that South Africa’s maize output for the 2010/11 season was likely to be 10,86 million tonnes.

In its fifth survey last month, the government’s Crop Estimates Committee (CEC) raised the maize output forecast for the season to 10,998 million tonnes.

“It will be reduced mainly due to lower yields presenting themselves after harvesting in Mpumalanga, the eastern side of the country,” a trader said.  — Reuters
