Upper Crust: A good spot for breakfast, lunch

By le connoisseurOn arrival in town it did not take us long to find Upper Crust, which is well sign-posted. This restaurant is situated on the first floor of Batanai Gardens along Jason Moyo Avenue.

We decided to sit outside the main enclosure of the restaurant and enjoy our food, as well as have a good view of activity as customers walked in and out of shops that share the same floor. Opposite, there is a Modelling Agency and I struggled to stop myself from staring at the stunning girls walking in and out.

We were greeted warmly by a fairly elderly fellow wearing ordinary clothes whom we assumed was another diner. Upper Crust has been in existence for years but has fairly recently undergone a change in management, who have given the restaurant a facelift.

We did not waste any time ordering our drinks, however most of the menu options were not available on the day of our visit. Our drinks arrived timeously and our food order was made shortly after receiving the drinks as by now our appetites were whetted by the cold beverages and the need to top up our food levels. Between the two of us we had quite a contrast.

Upper Crust does not have a particularly extensive menu compared with others of its ilk, but certainly there had been some changes and additional dishes added to the menu since my last visit. These included lasagne with salad, chicken in a choice of BBQ, “garlina”, tandoori or baked lemon and herb.

Upper Crust has two menus on offer, breakfast and lunch. Whilst I feasted on my chicken tikka kebab served with chips, my colleague dug deep into crumbed hake served with chips. My colleague did not have much to say as he happily consumed his hake. He was most impressed by how this was presented and said that it was very tasty.

Our waiter Oscar Mtandwa was cheerful and polite and made regular checks on us to ensure that we, and our drinks levels were OK. Considering his age and also that he was the only waiter there, serving four tables, he was not bothered in the least and just kept on smiling.

There were only three desserts on the menu and neither of us was tempted to try them. Upper Crust does not only cater to sit down customers but has spread their wings to delivering to the workforce all over the CBD.

All in all this restaurant is a pleasant place for a sensibly priced meal, but there is room for improvement as far as availability of menu items and staffing levels are concerned. Their prices are more than reasonable.
