BY MELISSA MPOFU Reigning Miss Universe Zimbabwe, Lisa Morgan, who represented the country at the Miss International beauty pageant and was crowned Miss Expressive at an event held in Chengdu, China on November 6 is expected back home today.  

 

The beauty queen said she is happy to be coming back home to her roots since she was struggling to cope with foreign traditions, mainly food.

“I can’t wait to get home. I am hungry for home-cooked food and I want sadza and maguru (offals),” said Morgan.She was initially scheduled to return home a week after the pageant but was asked to stay longer by the organisers of the international pageant who requested that the winners stay for another week in China.

The model did the nation proud as she was crowned Miss Expressive and received the Ambassador of Beauty award. Ecuador’s Maria Fernanda Cornejo was crowned Miss International while Venezuela’s Jessica Barboza was crowned first princess and Miss Mongolia, Tugsuu Idersaikhan, was crowned second princess.

This year’s Miss International beauty pageant had its focus on raising funds to support the victims of the earthquake that struck Japan. Numerous parties, support activities, grand parades and other events were held to raise the funds.

Meanwhile, reigning Miss Tourism Zimbabwe, Rumbidzai Mudzengerere is preparing for the Miss Tourism Queen International pageant where she will represent Zimbabwe. She will leave for China on December 9 for the international pageant which will be held in Xian, China on December 27.

The beauty will battle it out with 36 other models drawn from different parts of the world. On her preparations for the international pageant, Mudzengerere is being groomed by her former agency ZimGossip Models while Shamaika brand are working on her portfolio as well as garments.

“Everything is in order and I am just waiting for my national dress and talent costume which is being done by Shamaika,” said Mudzengerere.

She added that she was excited to be representing the country at an internationally recognised event. “It is always a good feeling to represent your country for anything. I will do my best and definitely raise the country’s flag high, just like Malaika and Lisa did,” she said.

Zimbabwe’s prolific sculptor, Dominic Benhura, is also doing a piece which the model will present as a national gift for auctioning at the Miss Tourism Queen International finals. The sculpture which she has called, Welcome to Zimbabwe is of a Zimbabwean lady with the national flag on her chest.
