Woman’s body — a sacred ground

WITH GRACE MUTANDWA Most men with several wives always hide behind tradition and try to convince those around them that our culture allows a man to marry as many wives as he wants.

Rarely do you get any other excuse, so recently, when some men and women gave a completely different reason why some men marry several women, it got me thinking about not just how some men view women but also what women think about themselves. One man told me he had five wives because he had an insatiable libido and needed to make love everyday.

He argued that one woman could not satisfy him and that the fact that women are out of action for the few days they have to deal with their menstrual cycle meant that he would have to “suffer”.

Strangely the women around agreed with this warped way of thinking and even added that a woman having her period is “dirty” and should not share the same bed with her husband even if they are not going to make love.

They said that women going through “their dirty phase” were also not allowed to cook. To them men seemed to need protection from menstruating women.

No sensible explanation was proffered for such lunatic beliefs. This is all a load of nonsense but obviously some people believe it and actually take it seriously.

So seriously that some men think if they marry more women they will have their physical needs satisfied everyday of the year — talk about uninterrupted lust!

But what these men and women seem unaware of is the fact that women who live together or work closely together end up sharing the same cycle.I noticed when I worked with a whole bunch of women that we all seemed to have an invisible tap turned on the moment one of us started her period, we would all follow suit.If you have daughters and sisters living with you, the same thing happens. Now when that happens what does a man with five or 10 wives do?  I suppose he would simply cross the road and find any available woman for a short-term contract. I have a problem with women who support this madness. The truth is that I actually feel sorry for them because the mere fact that they would allow it and that they too believe a perfectly normal occurrence is “dirty” means they do not understand their own bodies. They are uncomfortable with their own sexuality.

The only reason why anyone would think of menstrual periods as being dirty is if a woman does not keep herself clean during her time of the month. Unless someone is just given to being scruffy, it is very easy for a woman to deal with her period without anyone noticing or being assaulted by strange smells.

When I was growing up I used to hear people refer to periods just the same way, as did the group of elderly men and women I met recently. I had almost forgotten that there were still people who did not understand the fact that a woman having periods can still run the home and cook clean healthy food.

I have said in the past just how much I hate my periods. This is only because I find them inconvenient and I hate popping pills to take care of the pain but I accept that this is part of what makes me a woman. Our inability to deal with normal things that are part of our make up is the reason why so many young girls are sent out into the world with little or no information about their own bodies and how they should deal with normal occurrences like monthly periods. This is the reason why we still have young girls who think that once they have had their first period if they “play” in the literal sense with boys they will fall pregnant.

There are girls in biology classes who are ashamed to ask questions because they come from homes where menstruation is not even mentioned or when it is, it is called the “curse”.

I have met 30-year-old virgins who cannot even mention their own nether body parts – when they do they give their privates strange names. Some women do not even know how they look down there so if something were to go wrong they would not even know.

I am amazed at the number of adult women who are completely unaware of the changes their own bodies go through throughout the month. They do not know what are normal or abnormal fluids that need medical checking out.

Sometimes women ignore bleeding changes during their cycle because they are simply not equipped to deal with something they regard as “sinister and dirty”.

Cases of cervical cancer continue to rise because some women ignore whatever goes on “down there”.  Relationships are a partnership between two  people and if our men are not prepared to find out more about how our bodies function then we are stuck in broken down unions.

This is where some men feel justified to have several wives in the mistaken belief that it guarantees their access to unfettered physical satisfaction.  Men who assume they are clever enough to devise a solution for their lust open themselves and their wives to endless yeast infections and at worst HIV.There is nothing evil about getting to know your own body. You also need to encourage your other half to understand the changes you go through and more importantly both men and women need to accept that menstruation is perfectly normal and not a “dirty” thing.
