Beverly, the pole-dancer sets Harare abuzz

Standard People
BY SILENCE CHARUMBIRAThe past couple of years have seen Zimbabwe being rocked by various dance genres. In recent years dance groups became very popular but time eroded fans’ enjoyment of their unchanging routines, uniform costume outfits  and poor choreography culminating in dwindling audiences.

Popularity seems to have shifted to individual dancers that are doing anything and everything to lure fans. Despite the high number of dancing queens, there is one dancer in particular that has got Harare talking.

She has caused a stir where ever she has performed and has had tongues wagging  from Chitungwiza to Mufakose, Mabvuku to Dzivaresekwa because of her unusual dance routines.

Her name is Beverly Sibanda, though commonly referred to as Bev in entertainment circles. Beverly is one of the girls that have been at hit at the Londoners night club at  Harare’s Strathaven suburb,  with her erotic dances.

“Everywhere I go, women feel threatened. Ladies of the night think I will be out to snatch their men but I am not that cheap. I dance for a living and I am not a sex worker. Even musicians’ wives have called me threatening me,” said Bev.

“I remember receiving a call a few weeks ago and this woman said ‘I will end all the sexy-angels business if you mess with my man.’ But that is not what I do. I am in the same business with their husbands as an entertainer.

“I am different from most dancers who end up sleeping around with any man in the bar.” She refused to be called a stripper. “My routines are sexy and my attire usually revealing but I am not a stripper.”

But what made Beverly start dancing?“Dancing is my life and I am not ashamed. I survive like any working person. Even some of my siblings know they can come to me for assistance. I can afford to pay my rentals for decent accommodation and I can feed myself,” she said.

She was born on April 3 1991 as a last born in a family of 10. She started dancing in school and joined Zalabantu dance group from Gwanda before she started her career as a sex dancer 2008.

“I grew up in Greendale and went to Selborne Routledge School before I enrolled at Zengeza High 2 and then Charles Clerk for my O Levels.

“I did not collect my results though because I was naughty at school. I knew I was not successful so there was no point in me collecting the results.”

Bev has also been in the news as having had fought with Monica Chikasha aka Sele over Peter Moyo end of last year. Although Beverly refused to talk about her love life, she says she has a boyfriend who is in the Diaspora.

The rumour mill has also linked numerous other celebrities including Morgan Dembo to Beverly. “I have been accused countless times and some have even said I also pester Peter for sex but that is not the case. He calls me for his shows like any other musician.”
