Amakhosi invites new scripts

By Khulani NkabindePlaywrights in the country have been invited to submit their stage, radio and television scripts to Amakhosi Theatre Centre for consideration in this year’s arts programme.

Amakhosi director, Cont Mhlanga yesterday said they would take more scripts in anticipation of working with new radio stations.“There will soon be need for more productions for radio as well as television and we would like to be found ready to provide content,” said Mhlanga.

He said Amakhosi have also set up a fully fledged production department that will work hand in hand with the script writers.

“We would however advise script writers to first pitch their stories before they get down to serious work. This helps in developing the concept together so that when they write, they work on material we have agreed on,” said the veteran theatre producer and trainer.

He said even former Amakhosi students were also free to submit their stories. “It will be easier with them because they are trained and know what is required of them. We want to open up opportunities for them other than to let them sit at home doing nothing”.

Mhlanga said young writers should emulate one of the country’s most respected independent playwright, Stephen Chifunyise.Chifunyise has done a lot of work in theatre.

“He writes his stories and hands them over to Rooftop Promotions who produce them and pay him his performance royalties. We need more people like him who can work with production houses,” he said.

Mhlanga said Amakhosi will be taking scripts for this year and 2013 productions.
