BY GODWIN MUZARI   When little-known musicians collaborate on a production, the idea is usually to strengthen each other on an unfamiliar journey. When an upcoming musician combines with an established counterpart, the former seeks to ride on the latter’s fame. But, when two music grandmasters like Oliver Mtukudzi and Alick Macheso record a duet the aim is nothing less than unleashing a chartbuster.

The musicians last week announced they would cement their relationship through working together on a single which is likely to feature on Macheso’s album that is expected this year.

The duet is part of an ongoing programme that would see the music masters working on a number of projects together. The two will this year have a series of joint shows and the programme will be launched on Friday at a show at the Aquatic Complex in Chitungwiza.

The show is dubbed The Big Showdown and it will be the third time for the musicians to stage a joint performance at the venue following two sold out shows last year.

An organising partner in the upcoming gig, Simba Madziwa of Simad Promotions revealed the musicians had a plan to stage shows across the country until the end of the year.

“The show at the Aquatic Complex would be the launch of a serious programme that will see the two musicians staging shows in a number of cities in the country. They have decided to combine efforts in reaching out to their fans nationally,” said Madziwa.

Mtukudzi’s manager, Sam Mataure confirmed they had struck a deal that is expected to yield several positive results besides the joint shows at the duet.

“Mtukudzi and Macheso have a strong personal relationship, which makes it easy for them to work together on any project. They will be meeting next week (this week) to map a strategy for Friday’s show and finalise their plan to go into the studio together. Fans should expect surprises from the two musicians,” said Mataure.

Macheso’s manager William Tsandukwa confirmed they had discussed various projects.

“Mtukudzi is going to feature on our new album. Macheso is still to decide which song on the album he would do with Mtukudzi but they will definitely have a duet. Considering their profiles, the song is likely to be a hit,” said Tsandukwa.

Both managers confirmed the musicians would combine on a number of songs during the show at Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex.

Mtukudzi and Macheso have not recorded anything together but have had numerous collaborations with other musicians locally and internationally.
