BY EDGAR GWESHERenowned Zimbabwean artist, Tapfuma Gutsa says he has set his sights on nurturing and developing young talent following his appointment as resident artist at Harare Polytechnic College.

Gutsa, who worked with the college’s Fine Art department in November 2010, has been working on several projects with young artists enrolled at the institution and the veteran artist believes his presence there will put the college on the spotlight.

He said he felt obliged to impart his knowledge to the younger generation, a move he said would help in developing art in the country while at the same time “bringing art to the people”.

“It’s probably the first time in Zimbabwe that a college has invited a resident artist. I believe other tertiary institutions should follow suit so that students can benefit extensively by direct engagement with senior artists,” said Gutsa.

Gutsa also revealed he would be holding an exhibition at the institution in mid April this year.

“We would like to hold an exhibition here (Harare Polytechnic) so as to put the institution on the art circuit.

“The exhibition will include artifacts such as canvasses, jewellery, sculpture and fashion. It is also my hope that this exhibition will help in creating an appreciation of art among students here.”

Talented mbira musician, Hope Masike is billed to perform at the upcoming exhibition.
