Layers: The trick for unpredictable weather

Obituaries
As I am sitting and writing this article, I am wearing a polar fleece sweater, a pair of jeans and a pair of thick socks. I have thrown a rug over my lap too. It is not winter but it is raining outside and the temperatures have fallen. I have minimal adipose tissue so I need to layer up in order to keep warm.

I went out rather early this morning as I had a 6:30am meeting. So, I looked out of my window before deciding what to wear. At that moment it looked as though we would be experiencing clear skies with a decent amount of sunshine. Upon arrival at my meeting, I quickly regretted my choice of outfit. It was not warm enough.

Now, like I pointed out earlier, it is cold but it is not winter yet so, tempting as it may be to bring out the boots with fur and fur coats, I will resist the urge to do so. The temperatures are not low enough. It is funny to note how many, women especially, bring out their winter gear when it is overcast. For some reason, in Zimbabwe, overcast equates to winter.

Maybe it is also due to the fact that our winters are not very long nor are they too severe so we relish any moment we get to floss that fabulous winter outfit we own but only had three opportunities to wear during the winter. Then when the sun shows its face they end up lugging these heavy jackets around town or braving them and resorting to suffering in silence because removing the jacket may ruin the intended look.

Granted, this weather makes getting dressed in the morning taxing because you are unsure of what will happen with the weather throughout the day. So the best way to dress appropriately for work in this weather is to dress in layers. Wear stuff you can peel off. Instead of wearing a chunky winter coat you could go for a blouse, a cardigan and a light jacket on top. Should the sun end up shining in all its glory, you can take off the jacket or both the jacket and the cardigan. In the event it becomes cooler you can put on just the cardigan or just the jacket.

You want to avoid wearing one heavy layer in case it becomes warmer you end up getting saddled with this big jacket. As a lady, you could wear tights with a dress or skirt. By tights I do not mean leggings. I mean the ones that look like pantyhose but are thicker in texture. That way when it becomes warmer you can take them off instead of wearing trousers to work. If your feet tend to get cold like mine you may wear a pair of ankle boots but it would be wise to carry a pair of other heels with you because boots and socks will be terribly uncomfortable should it become hot.

Scarves are also good as they can be taken off. Just to reiterate, it is not winter so steer clear of woollen scarves as well as beanies and gloves as they may be over the top.
