Show them the way Connor

Sport
For a long time, local media has encountered difficulties when trying to get vital information from football clubs preparing for a new season.

The clubs have a tendency to keep information about player signings and transfers shrouded in secrecy, leaving journalists keen to do their work frustrated.

This practise has cascaded to the national team where the new team manager tries by all means to play hide and seek with journalists by refusing to avail the final squad that would have been selected.

There has always been a myth in African football that clubs release their final squads a few minutes before the game. But it is a different situation altogether with other football leagues around the globe. If you go to the clubs’ websites an hour before kickoff, all the information that journalists need would be there.

When I visited Burundi on an assignment with the Warriors recently, their national team manager came with 30 printed team sheets which he intended to give to both print and broadcasting journalists half an hour before kickoff.

This was a very big lesson to some in our midst who included our national team manager Nyika Chifamba. It is in this vein that I would like to applaud CAPS United new head coach Sean Connor for leading the way in showing locals how it is done.

For the first time in Zimbabwean football, Connor is  making it easier for journalists to get information about CAPS United by setting aside every Thursday of the week for a press conference.

This presents  journalists with a chance to get information about the team’s preparations ahead of matches. He also addresses issues of players coming in and those leaving the club.

Thumps up CAPS United for taking the lead in the right direction, I hope other clubs will follow suit.
