Inside Track:True Christians should be humble

Obituaries
Grace Mutandwa A reader of this column told me recently that she was sick and tired of some of her colleagues at work.

She identified them as a group of holier-than-thou Christians who boast about being religious but in the same breath antagonise those they do not like. She said she always found herself in conflict with these colleagues, some of whom have even threatened to fast for her so that something evil will befall her.

I believe in God but I sincerely do not believe that anyone can successfully pray to God to make the lives of those they hate impossible! But apparently some of these women claim that the God they believe in can punish people on their behalf at their behest.

On the other hand if these women are Satanists then of course their “god” can cause havoc in people’s lives.

Attending midweek prayers, all-night Friday prayers and going to church every Sunday does not necessarily mean that one is a Christian. Churches are great networking places. The only bad thing about church is that people tend to assume that those who visit churches are pure and righteous.

There are many people who go to church or describe themselves as devout Christians but are highly immoral, rude, cruel, obnoxious, self-possessed and emotionally unavailable.

We do have people whose deeds are amazingly warm and full of grace but they never go to any church. They believe in God and strongly believe that Christianity is not an event but a long journey, a process that must change the whole attitude of a human being. As one friend of mine rightly points out; baptism, being accepted into the Mothers’ Union and being the first in church every Sunday, does not qualify one to lay claim on being a true Christian.

My friend further argues that there are many imposters – people with other motives filling the pews and serious Christians must be wary of such people as these are the kind of people who push others out of church and are a menace at their places of work.

Only insecure and mean-spirited people brag about their level of spirituality and threaten others with hell and brimstone. True Christians are humble and pray for the greater good of the world and wish only good even on their worst enemies.

People who use religion to oppress, ridicule and terrorise others need God more than the people they attack. It is wrong to make life impossible for your workmates just because you think you are “anointed”. There must be regulations in every work place that clearly state that bullying even by Christians must not be tolerated.

If you are a praying woman and have no kind words about your colleague, members of your family, your friends, your husband, relatives and neighbours, then you must take a good look at yourself. It means you are the one who has problems. You need a complete life overhaul.

There is nothing to be admired in people who pretend to be Christians. We all admire women of good deeds, women endowed with empathy and women who take the time to make those around them feel included and valued.

Christianity is supposed to bring positive change in a person’s life. Anyone who claims that they fast to invoke misery upon those they dislike can only do so by summoning evil powers – powers that have nothing to do with God. Grace should be in everything you do and it should be a part of who you are. People of God preach peace and seek to make every space they occupy a place of serenity.

We spend most of our time at work and it should be a place where we do not feel threatened, sad and unappreciated. We all hope that we can make friends at work and we are also sensible enough to realise that we are not always going to get along with everyone but we should at least be civil.

We live in a world where politicians already make our lives hell, why do we feel we have to compliment their efforts by being nasty to those around us?

Work places where people work as a team are more productive. Mature employees know and appreciate the diversity that confronts them everyday at work. Mature people and real Christians embrace the differences in others. Stop giving Christianity a bad name. Make love not war, be a blessing to those around you.
