Egypt’s first Islamist president takes oath

CAIRO — Mohamed Mursi became Egypt’s first Islamist, civilian and freely elected president yesterday, reaping the fruits of last year’s popular revolt against Hosni Mubarak’s 30-year rule, although the military remains determined to call the shots.

The bearded US-trained engineer is Egypt’s first non-military leader since army officers toppled the king in 1952.

“God is greatest, above all,” Mursi said at the start of his first public speech at Cairo University, soon after swearing his oath at the Supreme Constitutional Court. — Reuters.
