Black Mambas…(0) 1
A Last Chibwiro’s second half strike condemned CAPS United to a sixth straight defeat in a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match at Morris Depot yesterday.
Chibwiro rifled home a grounder from an acute angle in the 63rd minute after being fed with a lob by Chimbadzwa Kasimero, to sentence United fans to a state of mourning.
Despite collecting three points, Mambas remained trapped in the relegation zone at 13th spot while CAPS also did not move from a risky position 11 where they are sitting with 19 points.
Mambas even had the luxury of missing from the spot in the first half when Kasimero’s penalty was saved by Muzondiwa Gonese in goals for the Green Machine.
CAPS United who last tasted victory on June 10 after edging Hardbody in Gweru, could not fully utilise six minutes of added time as it was Mambas who looked keen to score towards the end of the match.
To clearly define the gloomy state of affairs at the club as the match neared the end, CAPS co-directors, Twine Phiri and Farai Jere, who were sitting side-by-side in the VIP area, were visibly stung by the unfolding events as they wore solemn faces.
Popular fan, Chamunorwa Mukadze cried uncontrollably as he sat close to where the directors were sitting, in what has become his trademark expression of anguish after matches.
And to sum up the state of affairs at the club, a section of their fans broke into funeral songs soon after the final whistle.
Just into his second game since he took over, CAPS United coach Taurai Mangwiro conceded they lost the battle in the midfield.
“It is another disappointing game. Victory seems illusive for us. A lot of work still needs to be done in the midfield. Whenever we lost the ball in the midfield we always found it hard to retain possession,” said Mangwiro.
Mambas assistant coach Martin Bonongwe concurred with Mangwiro’s observation.
“We won the match in the midfield where we dominated right from the start of the match,” said Bonongwe.
