Miss Global Zimbabwe, Mutsa Mutare’s experiences in Jamaica where she had gone to participate at Miss Global International finals are being kept under wraps for political reasons.

Patron of the Miss Global International Zimbabwe pageant, Miriam Kangai, wife to Zanu PF politburo member Kumbirai Kangai, on Thursday allegedly barred Mutare from talking to StandardLife&Style because the organisers claimed the model’s trip had been politicised.

At the pageant, Mutare was on the spotlight following a diplomatic row that erupted between Kingston and Harare following President Robert Mugabe’s derogatory remarks about Jamaican men. Mugabe was quoted saying Jamaican men were lazy drunkards and ganja smokers.

Miss Global Zimbabwe spokesperson, Tare Munzara, said the directive from Kangai was not to prevent the model from speaking to StandardLife&Style but to first give an interview to state-controlled daily, The Herald.

“There is nothing I can do but you can see that everything is being politicised. There are conditions,” said Munzara.

“I would have loved you guys to interview her but the directive is to first give an interview to The Herald. I am sorry, speaking to Mutare now is quiet tricky.”

In a recent story published by our sister paper NewsDay, the model had expressed her intention to meet Mugabe after her return from Jamaica.

Mutare came out of the pageant empty-handed but Munzara distanced her failure from the diplomatic row.

“Probably she made a mistake or something that we are not yet sure of. But we don’t know if her failure could have been a result of the outstanding issue between the two countries,” said Munzara.

“Her failure was shocking to us. We were at least expecting her to be in the top five in the event that she failed to claim the title.” Commenting on what transpired at the pageant, Kangai said: “I cannot comment on what happened in Jamaica because I was not there but the pageant has been going on well.

“Right now we are focusing on introducing our new product (Miss Tiens) to Jamaica and broaden our marketing so that it becomes a brand that even people in Jamaica get to appreciate.”
